Eliminating Smart Quotes & Double Dash



It's the bane of electronic submissions - MICROSOFT WORD formatting.

Solid HTML editors like Dreamweaver will strip out the notorious "junk" xml/xhtml code inserted by Microsoft Word. However, some code just has to be cleaned up by hand, and it's ugly work. Two sets of options (controlled by clicking TOOLS then AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS in Microsoft Word) control this nefarious code in Word:

If you're a Microsoft Word user and wish to really please your electronic Editor, you'll disable these options:

First, on the AutoFormat tab, uncheck these options:

  • Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes
  • Hyphens with Dash

Second, on the AutoFormat As You Type tab, uncheck these options:

  • Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes
  • Hyphens with Dash
